Suspected abalone poachers nabbed

What initially seemed to be a call-out to a fairly normal fire for the Stellenbosch fire department, turned into an unexpected find for South African Police members in the otherwise quiet Paradyskloof.

During the early hours of Tuesday, at around 00:03, members of Stellenbosch police attended to an explosion of a gas bottle at a residence in Cynaroides Road Paradyskloof. Upon their arrival, the fire brigade was busy gaining access to the house to extinguish the fire.

The members conducted their investigation surrounding the circumstances of the incident when they came across a huge quantity of abalone with an expected street value of R900 000-00 and abalone drying equipment value at around R60 000-00 in the house.

Two Zimbabwean males aged 23 and 26 were arrested for the illegal possession of abalone, while the Chinese man in who’s name the property was leased is being sought. Once charged, the suspects are expected to make a court appearance in Stellenbosch.
