WPO returns classical music to Stellenbosch

Classical Kaleidoscope in Town Hall

The Winelands Philharmonic Orchestra (WPO) will open its 2026 season with Classical Kaleidoscope, a vibrant orchestral celebration taking place on Human Rights Day, Saturday, 21 March 2026.

Founded in 2022 by acclaimed conductor Reghardt Kühn, the WPO has quickly established itself as a cultural jewel in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

The WPO brings classical music to communities across the Cape. The ensemble unites musicians from diverse backgrounds, blending non-professional players with seasoned professionals.

Every WPO concert is a chance to explore the beauty and excitement of music together. From timeless classics to fresh South African sounds, the WPO brings a little something for everyone. Community partnership is vital to the WPO. They actively collaborate with groups in under-resourced communities, like the Steelband Project of Riebeek Kasteel, Muzukidz, The Stellenbosch Waldorf Marimba band, and Creative Skills Factory of Standord. These partnerships provide young musicians with opportunities to perform alongside our orchestra, gaining exposure to new audiences and showcasing their talents.

True to its title, Classical Kaleidoscope offers a dazzling array of orchestral works that highlight the diversity of style and mood in classical music. The programme spans musical eras, featuring beloved masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, Chabrier, Mascagni, and Gounod, alongside contemporary works by Eric Whitacre.

In the spirit of artistic excellence and community leadership, the evening opens with a showcase by the Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra, marking the first collaboration between the SYO and the Winelands Philharmonic Orchestra, a significant partnership that reflects a shared commitment to cultivating high-level orchestral artistry and sustaining the future of classical music in South Africa.

The evening also features guest soloist Marina Erasmus. A graduate of Stellenbosch University and the Royal College of Music in London, the soprano is renowned for her velvety tone and expressive artistry. Erasmus brings grace and emotional depth to what promises to be an exceptional evening of music.
