Newton-King retracts decision to stand for SU Council
After an enquiry, the Stellenbosch University has informed the Wilgenhof Alumni Association that the current Chair of Council, Dr Nicky Newton-King, has decided not to stand for re-election, neither as Chair nor as a member of Council. Her term as Chair ends on April 1.
The Association sees Dr Newton-King’s decision as a responsible step taken in the best interests of the University. The Council plays a vital role in the governance and long-term health of Stellenbosch University, and this moment offers an important opportunity for strengthening the process of renewal which is currently underway within the institution.
“The Wilgenhof Alumni Association remains committed to contributing positively to the University’s future. After a challenging period related to how matters at Wilgenhof were handled by Dr Newton-King and former Rector Prof Wim de Villiers, the Association is focused on the future, and supportive of the many positive steps that have been taken by the Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Deresh Ramjugernath,” said Jaco Rabie, spokesperson for the Association.
The Association notes the progress and the nearing end of the official facilitated renewal process at Wilgenhof, through which residents actively engaged with appointed facilitators to chart a new future for the residence. This process formed part of the settlement reached between the University and the Association in February 2025. The process is also intended as a catalyst for the ongoing transformation of Stellenbosch University and its other residential communities.
The Association appreciates the residents’ view that, although the official renewal has almost been finalised, the pursuit of continued renewal and relevance has always been integral to Wilgenhof – an institution long dedicated to respect, brotherhood, and mutual understanding.
“The process also created space for residents to practise one of Wilgenhof’s core values: critical thinking. We hope that this commitment to thoughtful engagement will continue to guide Wilgenhoffers and the broader University community for many years to come.”
