Somerset rowers triumph

Success for Somerset College rowers SA championships

Four Somerset College athletes competed with great success at the recent SA National Rowing Championships, held at the Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria.

Saskia Steltman, Andjela Mitrovic, Chris Plotz and Kyle Brooks represented Somerset College and the Western Cape Rowing Team at the national championships.

Not only did these rowers place in the finals in every event they entered, but they also brought home a total of 10 medals. An amazing achievement in an extremely competitive field, consisting of many university and u.23 national rowers.

The following results were achieved by them competing as part of the Western Cape Rowing team. Below the combined results from both competition days.

  • Chris Plotz and Kyle Brooks placed 5th in a very tough Men’s A doubles event final. They did very well in what was a hotly contested event by national athletes and top university rowers.
  • Saskia Steltman placed 7th in the women’s A single scull event final where she raced Olympians, u.23 national and top university athletes. Old Oak’s Katherine Williams won the race and Imke Tiaden, also on Old Oak, came 8th – our alumni making us proud too.
  • Andjela Mitrovic dominated the field with a clear win in the women’s B event final.
  • Chris Plotz and Kyle Brooks placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the junior men’s u.18 singles event, fending off some stiff competition from other junior national hopefuls.
  • Chris Plotz and Kyle Brooks dominated the field in the junior men’s u.18 doubles event, where they placed 2nd behind their Western Cape teammates.
  • Chris Plotz and Kyle Brooks, combined with their Western Cape teammates (Ben Day and Sasha Mosig from Rondebosch) took home gold in a hotly contested men’s A coxless quad event.
  • Saskia Steltman and Andji Mitrovic also competed in the women’s A doubles event where they finished 6th in what was a tough race.
  • Saskia Steltman and Andji Mitrovic both qualified through the heats for the junior women’s u.18 final. Both girls laid it all on the line to get their best result and ended 1st and 7th respectively.
  • Saskia Steltman was invited to row in a coxless quad with the University of Cape Town and in the Junior National Squad girls eight event, where they placed first in the Women’s A final in both events.
