Stellenbosch resident turns adversity into opportunity
In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, a local Stellenbosch resident has turned his challenges into a business venture. Sirgel Arnold, a wheelchair bound man, has launched a toilet paper business aimed at supporting himself and his young daughter, Miche.
Sirgel got diagnosed with a, so far, incurable degenerative muscle disease, which weakened his muscles to the point that he almost died. It can be called a miracle that he survived the abrupt collapse of his lung muscles. Since then he has been unable to walk, but this has not stopped him in the search for an income generating occupation.
He soon realized that traditional employment opportunities were limited. Rather than succumbing to despair, Sirgel decided to take matters into his own hands. With a small initial investment from someone he met at church, and a strong commitment to providing for his daughter, he began sourcing toilet paper and selling it directly to businesses and consumers in the Stellenbosch area.
Sirgel’s business model focuses on affordability and accessibility, ensuring that his products are available to all members of the community. He is happy to see that some creches and a church have become customers and he is hoping more b2b clients will come his way. He is learning to use social media to promote his brand and his story has resonated with many, inspiring others to support local businesses and recognize the strength of the human spirit. His business is still growing and he needs every customer he can get.
In addition to providing for his daughter, Sirgel is passionate about raising awareness for the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in the workforce. He hopes that his success will encourage others in similar situations to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. SIrgel’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. Through hard work and determination, he has not only created a sustainable livelihood for himself and his daughter but has also become a beacon of hope for others facing adversity.
