Student relief fund gets huge boost
Few places capture the spirit of student life at Stellenbosch University (SU) quite like the Neelsie. For the past 50 days, the Langenhoven Student Centre, better known as the Neelsie, has been buzzing with celebration, marking half a century of being the heart of SU student life.
From flashback photos and giveaways to tenant activations and faculty tributes, the golden anniversary campaign reflected the Neelsie’s enduring role in shaping generations of Maties. “The Neelsie’s 50th birthday has been a campus-wide reflection of what this iconic space means to our community,” says Faizel Moos, manager of the SU letting office.
Student debt relief
Among the highlights was a substantial R150 000 contribution to enable students who have met their academic requirements but still face financial barriers to graduate. This contribution was made possible through a partnership between Nedbank and the Neelsie Student Centre. As one of the Centre’s tenants, Nedbank has long been part of the Matie journey.
“Their support reflects a shared commitment to investing in the future of the students who make the Neelsie what it is today”, notes Moos.
“At Nedbank, we believe that supporting students on their journey to graduation is at the heart of our brand purpose. Our commitment goes beyond banking – we are here to help young South Africans unlock their potential, achieve their dreams, and build a brighter future. By partnering with the Neelsie, we’re investing in the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers,’ says John Makgato, head of youth strategy and CVP at Nedbank.
The final day of celebrations, held on 15 October 2025, captured the celebratory spirit with live performances by Majozi and Dappermuis, activations across the Rooiplein, and special giveaways sponsored by Neelsie tenants. Students, staff, and Neelsie tenants gathered to honour and celebrate the Neelsie’s 50-year legacy.
“The celebration was not only about the building,” adds Moos, “but five decades of shared memories, friendships, and everyday moments that define the Matie experience. From its humble beginnings as a long-awaited dream of a student centre, the Neelsie has grown into a symbol of togetherness – a place where ideas, friendships, and even businesses have taken shape and flourished within its walls.”
As the 50-day celebration drew to a close, one message remained clear: while the Neelsie has changed with the times, its essence remains the same. It is still the place where students meet to eat, laugh, dream, and build memories that last long after graduation.
“The Neelsie is a home that truly belongs to its people,” concludes Moos.
