Preserving the Legacy of Stellenbosch’s Farming Families

More Than a Farm: Preserving the Legacy of Stellenbosch’s Farming Families

A family farm is more than land. It is a story of generations, sacrifice, hard work and belonging. A new initiative is helping farming families preserve these stories for future generations – in their own voices.

The initiative was started by Dr Martin Combrinck (PhD), founder of Leave Your Legacy, to help families preserve their personal histories and pass their stories on to future generations through the power of audio storytelling.

In Stellenbosch, where vineyards, orchards and historic farmsteads form part of the landscape, family farming is about much more than producing crops or making wine. Behind many farms lies a history spanning generations: stories of ancestors who built a livelihood from the land, families who weathered difficult seasons, traditions passed from parent to child, and the values that continue to shape the next generation.

But there is a challenge facing many farming families. While the land may remain in the family for generations, the stories behind it can gradually disappear.

How many children and grandchildren know the full story of how their family farm began? Who remembers the hardships faced by earlier generations, the decisions that changed the farm’s future, or the people whose determination kept the family going? And how often do we discover that these stories were never properly recorded before the people who carried them were no longer able to tell them?

The Leave Your Legacy Audio Project offers farming families a simple, personal way to preserve this heritage.

Every farm has a story worth preserving

A farm’s history is not only about dates, deeds and photographs. It is also about the human experiences that bring those records to life.

It may be a grandfather’s account of arriving on the farm, a mother’s memories of raising children while helping run the business, or the story of how a family adapted through drought, changing markets and economic uncertainty.

There are stories of success, but also of setbacks, difficult decisions and lessons learned. There are memories of childhood, family gatherings, friendships with farm workers and neighbours, and the everyday moments that eventually become treasured family memories.

These are the details that help younger generations understand not only where they come from, but also the people, principles and sacrifices that shaped their lives.

For farming families, preserving this heritage can be particularly meaningful. A farm is often both a business and a family identity, connecting generations through a shared responsibility for the land.

Preserving memories in the family’s own voice

The Leave Your Legacy Audio Project helps families capture these experiences through guided audio recordings. Rather than having to write a book themselves, family members can speak naturally about their lives, memories and experiences.

The process is designed to be straightforward and manageable. Participants are guided through questions that help them recall important events, describe their upbringing, share family traditions and reflect on what they have learned throughout their lives.

The result is a collection of personal recordings that can be edited and developed into a lasting family legacy.

There is something special about hearing a loved one tell their own story. Their voice, expressions, humour and way of remembering bring an authenticity that written records alone cannot always convey. Long after a conversation has faded from memory, these recordings can allow children, grandchildren and future generations to hear family members speaking about the lives they lived.

The project is not about creating a polished historical account or producing a commercial publication. It is about capturing the people behind the history — while there is still time to ask the questions.

A gift for the next generation

For some families, the project may become a record of a farm’s origins and development. For others, it may focus on the personal journeys of parents and grandparents, the values that guided the family, or the experiences that shaped successive generations.

Each family’s story will be different, and that is precisely the point.

Preserving a legacy does not require a famous name or an extraordinary life. The everyday experiences of ordinary people often become the most valuable inheritance a family can pass on.

For Stellenbosch’s farming community, where family history and agricultural heritage are closely intertwined, recording these stories offers a way to honour the past while giving future generations a deeper understanding of their roots.

The land may tell part of the story. The people who worked it can tell the rest.

Your farm has a history. Your family has a story. Make sure the next generation gets to hear it.
