Festival builds learners’ numerical skills
Words Open Worlds (WOW), an empowerment initiative of Stellenbosch University, is proud to introduce the first nationwide WOW Numeracy Festival.
Thanks to the support of the Millennium Trust, the WOW Numeracy Festival will be hosted at circuit, district and provincial level in all nine provinces of South Africa this year. Interested schools are invited to enter learners in the following grades to take part in the event:
- Primary schools: Grades 4 to 7
- Secondary schools: Grades 8 and 9
The WOW Numeracy Festival is hosted in Afrikaans.
“The Numeracy Festival serves as an exciting platform for learners to showcase their numerical skills and mathematical reasoning, while also boosting academic confidence and school pride,” says Fiona van Kerwel, WOW manager. “We aim to improve mathematical literacy and help nurture a love of mathematics by combining fun calculations with an element of suspense.”

Registrations for the 2026 WOW Numeracy Festival are open until Monday, 15 June 2026 at 17:00.

Timeline and venues
The WOW Numeracy Festival will start with circuit rounds in July and will conclude with the provincial rounds in October. In most instances, it will be hosted at participating schools. All schools that have registered will be informed of the exact dates and venues.
